Wildfire. Thatâs how quickly gossip spread across the castle grounds. Secrets lit up like flames, and it was only a matter of time before every ear caught fire with the recent story about Andre and Elice.
As soon as Elice made it down to the dining room table for breakfast the next morning, she had heard several people around her whispering about her dumping Andre.
She ripped a piece of her breakfast bun and shoved it in her mouth, chewing angrily as she thought about it. She wasnât even with Andre, so how could she dump him?
Grabbing her glass of fresh apple cider, she took a sip, then almost threw the glass to the floor. This was not how it was supposed to go. She was supposed to still be on friendly terms with Andre, run straight into Jamesâs arms, and maybe, finally, get a decent nightâs sleep.
Instead, she had lost a friend, still hadnât seen James, and her mind was still weary from the little sleep she had gotten the past few days.
With the back of her hand, she rubbed at her tired eyes, then opened them wide as she made a silly face. She had resorted to stretching out her facial muscles every few minutes lest they continue to sag until she fell asleep. But she couldnât keep this up forever, and she definitely couldnât sleep well with the nightmares hounding her.
The door to the dining room flew open, and Serena stood in the doorway, panting and hanging on to the frame for dear life.
âHeâs here,â Serena said in between gasps.
Elice jumped out of her seat. She had asked Serena to keep the maids on the lookout for when James arrived from Talin. She knew they would be the first to know, seeing as how they always knew everything.
She rushed to the door, but Serena stopped her before she could leave. The maid adjusted Eliceâs hair, pulling loose a few strands so they curled around her face. Then she pinched Eliceâs cheeks and pulled at the hem of her dress so it wasnât crooked.
Elice pulled her in for a hug when she was done. âWish me luck.â
âYou donât need it, but Iâll wish you good luck, anyway.â
Elice set off at a quick jog, Michael hot on her heels, pushing past the various servants and the odd lords and ladies who visited the castle. Everyone she passed gave her weird looks, but she didnât care.
She had to find James before the gossip did. She wanted to be the one to tell him her good news. Their good news, if he still felt the same way about her.
Once in the barracks, she wove her way down the inner corridors and straight to Jamesâs office. With a few loud bangs, she knocked on the door. A voice yelled for her to enter, and she had to remind herself to breathe before she opened it.
She pushed the door and came face-to-face with the man sheâd been wanting to see for the past four days. He stood before his desk, a sheet of paper in his hands.
